Follow up of the Uganda FP London Summit Commitments

On 11 July 2012, the UK Government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with UNFPA and other partners hosted a groundbreaking Summit that mobilized global policy, financing, commodity, and service delivery commitments to support the rights of an additional 120 million women and girls in the world’s poorest countries to use contraceptive information, services and supplies, without coercion or discrimination, by 2020.

At the Family Planning London Summit, Uganda committed itself to ensuring an enabling policy environment to allow women to exercise their family planning choices by increasing the financial investment into family planning, and strengthen service delivery. Specifically, Government committed itself to increase the government allocation for family planning supplies from USD 3.3 million per year currently to USD 5 million per year for the next 5 years and mobilize an additional USD 5 million from donors. This will be supported by development of a reproductive health sub-account to track RH resource flows.

In addition, Government committed to strengthening the National Medial Stores to improve distribution of reproductive health supplies/commodities to public and private health delivery units so as to prevent stock out of family planning supplies.

As a follow up of the Uganda FP London Summit Commitments, Partners in Population and Development Africa Regional Office (PPD ARO) organized two meetings. The meetings were attended by Parliamentarians, Ministry of Health and other stakeholders such as Population Secretariat, Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Reproductive Health Uganda, Family Health International, DSW and the media
The outcome of the meetings was:
1.    An action Plan to guide the implementation of the  FP Summit Commitments by the Parliamentarians
2.    A committee of 8 Parliamentarians to follow up on the implementation of the developed action plan
